Character Names

Re: Character Names

Postby Melanctha » April 12th, 2015, 9:16 pm

Melanctha
from the Greek, meaning of the black flower.

Mel was named for her hair color, by parents who had four boys prior. Flower is likely drawn from its feminine qualities they hoped their daughter would embody.

syll. me-lan-(c)(t)ha

Meh-lah-ngk-thah

I am admittedly having a really hard time with the syllable that sounds like the c. it says ng (as in sing) and k (as in key). If anyone has advice on that one, let me know.

Voltanis: Vol-tah-nis not Vol-tanis
Falchor: Fal-kor because I keep hearing Falchur from people.

Also his given name is Magne: Mag-ne not Manye as in French. He's a Norseman, so hard consonants.

Everyone else is simple, or should be.

Postby Seppuku » April 13th, 2015, 3:50 pm

Seppuku - sĕp′o͞o-ko͞o

Also known as hara-kiri. It's a term given via the Japanese samurai for the act of ritual suicide by disembowelment.

Sepp's real name is Adrián, pronounced AH-dree-ahn. From what I've researched, it comes from the Venetic word adur ('water') and has origins in the region of Adria.

He took the alias 'Seppuku' to help throw off a group of detectives and to honor his missing brother, Josef (Sepp is often used a nickname for Josef). He prefers to be called 'Sepp,' but he won't make a big deal about it. >.>

Postby Reina » April 13th, 2015, 10:24 pm

Reina: Ray-nah. Reinalla: Ray-nah-lah.

Reina meaning 'queen' in Spanish. Though I honestly just loved the name. x.x Reinalla doesn't mean anything that I know of? I just wanted to make her name longer. x.x

Astraea: aeS-TREY-aa.

Her middle name Latinized form of the Greek name Astraia, derived from the Greek word 'aster' which means 'star'. The English translation is 'star-maiden'.

Yep, I've been pronouncing Tifereath's wrong and Liander's right. Go figure.

Caden... Well, that's fairly simple.

People tend to think Amarande is Ama-ran-dee. Yeah, no. Ama-rahn-day. Rahn, like... ron. >.>;

Krimzen is easy, just crimson spelled differently. The person who brought me into RB named her and it stuck.

Maiko - My-ee-ko.

I think that's it on the ones I've had pronounced wrong throughout the years.

This thread was needed, considering there's some names like Zohartze I wouldn't even try with, lol.

Postby Leah » April 14th, 2015, 2:32 pm

So, I went over Leah already.
(Lee-uh) Ann. Not Lee'Ann
There's a whole thing behind naming her. It's a personal meaning, that only one person knows.
And it's also not really relevant IC

There's Dia:
Die-ah
Means "day" in Spanish

Mina:
Meen-ah
Of Arabic origin, means "Light"

And I think that covers the one's that aren't totally obvious.

Sitrence:
Sit like.... telling a dog to sit. Ren, self explainatory. ce, like the end of condolence.

Though the T and R are kinda rolled together when pronouncing the full name.

Saressa - Suh-ress-uh. I've heard it said as Suh-reez-uh, Suh-reece-uh and Suh-ris-sa.
She just prefers to go by Ressa or Res.

Benetsee - Been-et-see. She just commonly just goes by Benny.

Rhys - Reese/Reece. Someone said Rice not too long ago.

Shiloh - Shy-low

Postby Azerri » April 16th, 2015, 3:05 pm

Azerri - long A like Ah (not ay) Zer , like error with a z before it, ee
Ah-Zer-ee

Her name is original, didn't have anything fancy or cool history wise to explain with her name unfortunately

~~~
Amari - rather simple, Am (ma but reversed), Are - re
Am-Are-Re
Her IGN:
Mahila-Daeva
Ma-Heel-ee-La Day-Va
Mahila is Hindi for Woman or Female. Deva in Hindi is Deity
Daeva on the other hand is from the Zoroastrian religious context, Pre-Irananion and even Persian eras, meaning demon or false god, which also included the hindu meaning of deity.
Postby Nemesis » April 16th, 2015, 6:30 pm
Nemesis [( nem -uh-sis)] Pretty simple ~nods~
In classical mythology, the Greek goddess of vengeance.
1.
(Greek myth) the goddess of retribution and vengeance
2.
(sometimes not capital) any agency of retribution, punishment and vengeance
Word Origin
C16: via Latin from Greek: righteous wrath, from némein to distribute what is due
Note : By extension, a “nemesis” is an avenger. One's nemesis is that which will bring on one's destruction or downfall.
He's about to be the star of my next Solo-Rp / Not-So-Short Story, so i figure it's good measure to give pronunciations on my favorite Atlantean.
Note that i'm only giving pronunciations for those few of his 19 names that are currently revealed. :P The rest might come later, maybe not. A man needs mystery. :)
Corvun
(Khor-Voon)
Khor as in "Corner" except with a harsher K sound instead of the soft C.
Voon as in the first half of "Voodoo". With an N.
Shekanar
Sheh-KAH-Nah
Sheh as in the word "Shed" without the D; Ka as in "Ra", the egyptian sun god with a harsh K instead of the R; Nah as in "NARcissist".
Mar'ya
MAR-Yah
Aguina
Ah-kwee-nah
Solun
Soul-Oon (similar to Corvun's first name.)
Sha'sriga
Shass-ree-gah
Rodargo - Dahlia - Kee - Amora - Jessi - Max - Evie
